PERFITRI is an association, founded in Jakarta on the 13th March 2009, which brings together doctors and experts that provide services , or have an interest, in the field of In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) in Indonesia. In English, PERFITRI is known as the Indonesian Association for In Vitro Fertilization (IAIVF), and is currently chaired by Prof. Budi Wiweko, SpOG (K), MPH.
It has been more than 30 years since the first IVF baby, Louise Brown, was born. Developed by Patrick Steptoe and Robert Edwards at the Bourn Hall Clinic in the UK, , to date almost 5 million babies all over the world have been successfully delivered by this technique. Improvements in knowledge and technologies, has made IVF one of the major procedures used to solve the problems of many infertile couples, including those in Indonesia.
The first Indonesian IVF procedure was performed at Harapan Kita Children and Maternal Hospital Jakarta in 1987 by Sudraji Sumapraja, and colleagues. Their inspiration came from Prof.DR. Ing. BJ Habibie’s speech in 1983 which highlighted the need for Indonesia to follow the example set by developed countries. At the end of 1985 when Sudraji Sumapraja became vice director of Harapan Kita Children and Maternal Hospital, he developed the idea to launch the IVF program in this hospital. The idea of an Indonesian IVF clinic was a revelation back in 1983, and was named Melati, an acronym of Melahirkan Anak Tabung Indonesia.
On April 16th 1987the IVF team was formed, and on the 2nd may 1988 the first Indonesian IVF baby, Nugroho Karyanto, was born. Although the IAIVF is still relatively young, it has a steadily growing membership, with 39 IVF centers spread all over Indonesia.
